Street Sweeping

Street Sweeping provides many benefits to the City of Highland. The more obvious benefit is the collection and removal of paper, leaves, and other visible debris that collect in the gutters. This debris can block catch basins and other storm water facilities, causing localized flooding during heavy rains.

Street sweepers remove harmful pollutants from the streets once a week. The street sweeper will sweep streets the day after your refuse collection day. If your refuse collection day is Friday, then your street will be swept on Monday. If trash pick up is delayed one day due to a holiday, the street sweeper will be delayed one day as well. The street sweeper in residential areas can sweep any time between 7am and 5pm, the day after your trash day.

Since sweeping is done as close to the curb as possible, things like overhanging tree branches, basketball hoops, refuse carts and especially parked vehicles cause the operator to swing wide to miss them. When this happens, debris is left on the street and the quality of the sweeping is reduced. Help us to serve you better by removing all possible obstacles from the street on your scheduled day. Although the City of Highland does not enforce street sweeping parking restrictions, we appreciate your assistance in keeping the streets clear on your scheduled day.

Street sweeping also serves as one of our Best Management Practices (BMPs) to control and improve water quality.
